Air Asia London Flights Review

Air Asia will commence flights to London Stansted from Kuala Lumpur on March 11. This is the latest foray of Air Asia into the long haul market, which has followed their move into 3 cities in Australia as well as China.

The Air Asia long haul company is known as Air Asia X.

There are two seat classes - standard economy, and Premium XL Seats, offering longer seat width and legroom.

How did you find the long haul version of Air Asia from London to Malaysia?

Are the seats on Air Asia X flights suitable for long haul travel?

Do you think that the price difference with major airlines is worth it on long flights?

Any other issues on the London to Malaysia route?

  1. Flight was fine seats were just ok but couldnt expect too much. Reasonably regular service by the attendants. Its a long flight anyway so dont expect too much.

Ive flown with British and Singapore on the same journey distance/time and air asia doesnt compare. In saying that this was a much cheaper flight.

Dont expect to be greeted with too much warmth at LCCT airport. Its not the main terminal in KL its just for low cost airline. Big queue to go through customs and big rush for bags on the carousel.

KL is good though worth a visit whichever way you decide to travel.

Thanks for the blog good resource.

  2. I had travelled using Airasia X to Stansted (London) on 1/4/2009 and back on 8/4/2009. Service on flight is fair. Dont expect to much as this is a low cost carrier. Main meal serves twice but we can still order the food based on the menu given. Seat for economy class is acceptable. It is much comfortable than domestic flight operated by air asia. Inflight entertainment needs improvement. Eventhough media player is available for rent, the movies contained in the player were not updated. To my opininion, it should be updated for every 3 days so that the same passenger will not have to watch the same movies. Monthly update is too long as most of the same passenger will travel to and fro London within 1 -2 week. New international departure hall at LCCT is much better now. Arriving at Stansted is OK though some of us may say that the airport is quite far from Central London. But the airport is well connected by efficient public service. We can choose either to use train, bus or taxi depending on your own budget. If by bus, it took about 1 to 1.5 hours to Central London, same with KLIA to KL Central. Passport Control Service is very efficient. I observed that most of the single traveller will clear within 3 minutes at the imigresion boot. Overall, my experience travelling to London by Air Asia X is satisfactoriy and I will be using it again if I have the chance (enough budget) going to London.

  3. Seats are fine. But I found the flight totally boring with no free entertainment, no route map etc. You can pay for entertainment but the sets are limited and ran out, also some people had problem with them. The lights were left on the whole journey and the window shades were left up so we had bright daylight for 13 hours. Unfortunately I didn't order meals and wasn't able to buy them on board as they ran out. By the time we approached London from KL they even ran out of snacks to purchase. Mid way through the flight everyone got hungry and was buying food. The staff work hard as there are less crew than on other airlines. I found the bus from Standsted into London was OK but it took 75 mins which was a long time after a long haul flight. OK you can take the express train but it's more expensive.
Unfortunately I paid a LOT for my KL to London flight as I booked late. I certainly wouldn't fly AirAsia again long haul unless I can get a cheap flight.

  4. PER-KL-STN.
PER - KL - PER was on Airbus 330, the seats are essentially 3 inch foam, the back support does not recline but instead the bottom seat cushion moves forward by about 2 inches - do not expect a comfortable recline. Prior to departure they pack you in the plane 45-60 mins before departure time but do not turn the air-conditioning on till the plane departs, making it very uncomfortable in the heat and humidity especially in KL. You land on the tarmac and walk to the terminal which is quite chaotic. Even though in transit you need to unnecessarily check in and out of customs and immigration both ways. Checking baggage through for the next leg is not allowed.
KL - STN - KL was on Airbus 340, an old and rattly plane. Seats in Premium Economy are old business class seats with good padding and very comfortable recline (no flat beds). Pre ordered meals are served 2 hours after departure and the second serving 2 hours before landing. Meals are decent, both in taste and quantity. They are unable to cater to all special need meals hence taking your own food is ok. Air crew was friendly and helpful. Overall good value for money.

  8. Can anyone tell me anything on the imigresent? As I have heard that if u didnt bring enough document (such as company letter stated u as employee and so on), u might get booted back to KL. This especially happened to Chinese, due to human trafic and illegal immigrant from China. Can anyone advice on this issue? Thanks in advance!

  14. Is it me? I couldn't find any deals on the current promotions from London to KL at all for the reported £70 odd. What a disapointment & waste of time trying to find a return trip for two last night and again this morning.

  16. I flew AirAsiaX from KUL->STD last October. With the money i saved versus a conventional flight, i bought an Asus EePC mini netbook, which i then loaded with 15 hours worth of movies. my wife and i watched it during the flights to/from London and were not bored one bit, plus we had a 'free' netbook to keep on our journeys! Definitely will return again when my wallet fattens up a bit. Viva AirAsia!

  17. I flew AirAsiaX from STD->KUL on 3/8/2010 with my 8-yr-old daughter recently. The flight was full probably due to the summer holidays. I must say I'm really not satisfied with the in-flight service during my recent trip.

Firstly, it seemed that the flight attendants were paying more attention to those passengers who DID NOT order prebooked meals, rather than to those who did. They were busy taking orders from the former rather than trying to serve the latter. Only after the former were served that the passengers who ordered preboooked meals were served.

The flight attendants also seemed very busy scurrying around that it was impossible to catch their attention while they were walking pass you. Attempts by myself and the passengers near me to catch their attention when they were walking by failed each time and therefore the 'call button' had to be used each time. This may not be a major issue, however the most annoying thing was when I tried to rent the in-flight entertainment kits for myself and my daughter. The first time I requested for those from the flight attendant, I was told to wait until the meals were served to all passengers. The second time I requested a couple hours later, the flight attendant (a different one) told me that they were still busy serving food and that they were shortstaffed!! Both flight attendants never bothered to come back to me with my requests and eventually I just gave up as by then we were nearly halfway to KL. Then the passenger sitting next to me also tried to request for the entertainment kit but was told they were all sold out.

As for the seats, I cannot complain much as understandably one cannot expect business-class or first-class comfort on economy class. Therefore I would say the seats are fairly okay.

One last thing which really added to my annoyance during my recent trip was how long it took for the luggages to arrive. I had to wait for ONE AND HALF HOURS for my luggages to arrive at the LCCT terminal!!! Imagine after 13 hours of long, uncomfortable flight, one had to wait that long to claim the baggages!! The lady I was talking to as we were waiting for our luggages said that it was her and her family's first time flying AirAsiaX and they were very dissatisfied with the whole experience that they would never want to fly AirAsiaX again.

I have flown AirAsia many, many times and even AirAsiaX KUL-STD in April/May 2009 and I must say the in-flight service during that 2009 trip was entirely different than what we had recently. I was very satisfied with the service and attention given by the flight attendants during that 2009 trip, and would even say that they matched in-flight service offered on Malaysia's major airline. But now after the last experience, I'm dreading the trip back to London Stansted which I will be taking in 2 weeks' time by return flight on AirAsiaX.

I really hope the poor services on AirAsiaX will improve again as this may be a major deterrent to a lot of prospective travellers to fly long haul on AirAsiaX.

  19. How often does the flight from London to KL delay? If i'm gonna take a flight from London to KL and I will probably arrive in KL at 7pm(if there's no delay). However, If after that I take the last flight from KL to Kota Kinabalu (21:25 - 00.00), will it be risky?

  20. For the passenger who managed to download your 15 hours long movies, how did you keep your battery running? Is there power socket next to the seat?

    Thanks!

  21. I have been flying by Airasia for the last 3years, the flights used to be cheap not anymore. When you check in by Web you hand over the bags at the Premier class counter. But now you have to wait in the queue, very frustrating , cannot contact anybody by Telephone, London 24hrs call Center is a waste of time, this will be my last flight.

  28. Getting a hotel package deal can save you a huge amount of money on your vacation. If you buy them all separately, you end up with a giant bill. You have to pay full price for your flight, your hotel, and your car if you choose to rent one in your destination. Sometimes it's impossible to get a lower price for all of it. But, if you look for package deals, you may find one that saves you money.
